Authors and Photographers Guidelines
SNVM will consider well-researched submissions on any topics concerning history, natural history, or art of the Sierra Nevada and Gold Country regions.
We welcome and encourage queries from writers familiar with SNVM. Our ideal articles include strong storytelling, interesting characters, and a clear, jargon-free style. We strive to understand and communicate all points of view in an objective fashion.
Sierra Nevada Virtual Museum is divided into “Galleries.” Each Gallery focuses on one aspect of the Sierra Nevada experience. The Galleries are “The Arts,” “History”, and “Natural History.” Each gallery has subcategories. “Exhibits” are found in each gallery that present more detailed examinations of relevant topics.
There is also a “Special Exhibits” Gallery that features the following subcategories:
- On the Road: Places to Visit – illustrated descriptions of places to visit relevant to the topic, such as historic sites or museums
- Virtual Field Trips – illustrated descriptions of “field trips” undertaken by a group to a spot relevant to the topic, such as a visit to Yosemite
- Photo/Image Gallery – a collection of photos or images not linked to any specific article
- Biographies and Profiles – illustrated biographies or profiles of interesting individuals
If available, please refer to the SNVM site map for a listing of additional gallery categories and subcategories.

Electronic and Photographic Images Guidelines
We would like every submission to SNVM to be illustrated, if possible. Any number of images may be submitted, but SNVM reserves the right to select what images, if any, will be utilized.
SNVM prefers electronic images. Images should be saved as JPEG files. We can also accept other image formats such as psd, png, tif, bmp, and swf. SNVM will also accept video .mov files, audio tapes, aif, wav or mp3 files. For inclusion on the website, submit 72 ppi image files with pixel dimension no larger than 1600 pixels in either dimension. Files should be clearly labeled. Although electronic images are clearly preferred, SNVM will accept good quality color or black and white prints (8x10 preferred) and 35 mm negatives and slides. These will be scanned and digitized. SNVM reserves the right to optimize and resize images for the web.
All submissions should include the name and other contact information of the photographer or image provider, as it is to appear in the credit line and description of the place or name of the subject for the caption. Please also indicate whether SNVM should return the photo after use or keep it for our files. If you wish your images to be returned, please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope. We will make every effort to return your images, but unfortunately cannot guarantee this. Please be sure to retain your own copies of any submissions in case of loss.
