Donner Lake is a freshwater lake that is much smaller than nearby Lake Tahoe. It is located in the town of Truckee in the north central Sierra Nevada. It is easily viewed from Interstate 80.  Originally called Truckee’s Lake, it is named after the tragic Donner Party, which spent a fateful winter near the lake in 1846.
